1.
Fall 04:35
I fell from the sky Full of high sensations My roots felt so dry Ripe for true salvation And strapped to my back Was a plead for mercy The brute earthly facts Were for always to change me Come shiny beliefs And reliefs
2.
Forget 04:57
Dancing in the streets Soaking wet and poor Sliding through the day Happy as ever before I’d get drunk Forget the world I live in I’d get drunk Forget my intense love For her Dancing all night Sharing laughter and smiles How I’d live my life Things I wouldn’t dare I’d get drunk Kill every hope I’ve in mind I’d get drunk Wake up and see what I find I’d get drunk Forget the world I live in I’d get drunk Forget my intense love For her
3.
Striving to the top Never ever stop Is there any other way Is there any other way In an open plan office Of your widest sense The line is moving From desk to desk He climbs through the window Into another room Searching through the files Looking for a clue The paper trail Does it lead to you? Does it lead to you? It drives me on Oh it drives me on It would drive me on etc. In aircon flux Like a piece of dust Silhouettes manoeuvre Behind the glass See them marching In cheap suits If the target is freedom... Aim higher If belief is treason... Run faster Shakes this feeling Where ambition corrodes These endless motions We're going through it We're going through it It drives me on (rep.)
4.
Formation 05:18
Give me a reason to hold you Give me a reason to hold you Give me a reason to light your flame Give me a reason to light your flame What is the meaning of "us" What is the meaning of "us" I want to believe in a sacred trust I want to believe in a sacred trust What's the right thing to do when the heat is on? (rep.) Men are marching Men are trembling Fallen grace and liberty talk Casting spells of a cruel tomorrow I can tell by the way that they walk What's the right thing to do when the heat is on? (rep.) Make a fire that will burn so brightly And give strength to motions of love Hold us tight in a great formation Spreading grace and freedom for all So many reasons for hanging on...
5.
New Kind 04:28
Give you a reason to hold me (rep.) I don’t know what’s around the corner I can’t say what’s coming my way What’s a voice without new sensations? My intentions wither away... Give you a reason to keep me warm Come the reign of deep sensations Come the reign of colour and light Come the day of rediscover Pretty seasons Reason and sight Give you a reason to hold me I spend my time in Silent remembrance I keep my shame and my shivers And turmoil and pain I see my shame and my shivers Coming of age I keep my shame and deliver A new kind of self A new kind of self etc.
6.
Kangaroo caught the flu Socialist Cayman guru Feeling blue Sway the hip Lick your lips Rectums pass Jaunty eye Blink and smile Synthesise up to size Something in my heart Something in my heart Treat yourself like it’s a-ok Like it’s childsplay (rep.) Something in my heart breaks and tears apart (rep.)

about

This is the first proper Painted Romans studio album since 2010. It features a notable vocal and lyric contribution by London based multi-artist and long-time collaborator Patrick Wray, as well as wonderful vocals by the poet and actress Roxy Dunn ('Drives Me On').

Music video enthusiasts can marvel over these two videos:

'Treat Yourself' - www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z08Av72ZAk4

Trivia:

'Forget' was a staple in the live set of Wallpaper Silhouettes. We recorded it in 2002, thinking that it would go onto the first WS album 'Echo the World (We Live In)'. However, as the album was taking form we decided that it didn't fit on there, thus put it in a box for another occasion. That occasion never occurred...

Fast forward to circa March 2020. I set about making an album, and within two-three months I had thirteen tracks ready to go. Didn't take long though before I lost interest in it. Nothing about it sounded right, so I just put it away (ironically it was called 'Pass') and instead began working on what would become 'Heart'. Songs like 'Fall', 'New Kind', 'Treat Yourself', and 'Drives Me On' came off the previous effort, but were re-moulded into that which lie closest to my heart (no pun intended). 'Formation' was a "loose" one written in 2020. But it was here that 'Forget' sprang to mind. And so I dug into the old box, found the recordings from 2002, and realised that they were quite excellent. In fact, I decided to keep the original acoustic drums, the guitars, and even the vocals(!), and to record a different bass, add some keyboards and additional percussion. And so it found a home at last, right here on 'Heart', and here is exactly where it belongs! Couldn't have been happier.

To me, these realities make 'Heart' as much a successor to the tough gothy post-punk of early Wallpaper Silhouettes, as it is a profound personal and musical re-awakening from more than a decade of "wandering in the dark". It is a great album, by far my personal favourite. Incidentally it is also the album that hauled Painted Romans out of total oblivion, although I'm not so sure about the darkness...
