'Song & Century' is the fourth or fifth studio album, depending on how you count the back-catalogue.

Painted Romans was never any good at keeping a line-up together for long. The last proper one with Mats D., Jan Ottar, and Thomas ran from late 2020 to ‘22 and had great potential. Songs like 'Cold Delight' and 'Hour of Fear' are testaments to that. But good things seldom last.

'Song & Century' clocks in at 42 minutes and was Mats's artistic headache in solitude for a solid ten months. It showcases typical Painted Romans misbehaviour, in true spirit. Gone is the gothrock style of late alá 'Memento Mori'. Instead it seems to offer gothic-infused folk vibes. Apocalyptic at that. It wants to flirt with pop, but is more inclined to mock it. It seems bent on pounding the listener with post-industrial agony; to wear down and suck dry. It attempts to elevate itself up to heaven, but insists on being tied down in an unruly gutter of madness.

Painted Romans was always about eclectic crossings of musical boundaries. Indeed, disrespect for convention and unchained artistic expression was once the contaminated air that filled the mythical corridors of the strange beast we tend to speak of as ‘post-punk’.

So maybe 'Song & Century' is just that, an old-fashioned post-punk album? Or what do YOU make of it?
